Jerome asked:
My friend told me that police sniffer dogs can only work for around half an hour whilst attempting to detect drugs in crowds. He explained that their noses are too sensitive to the different smells around and that they have to be given a break so that they are not over loaded with different scents. Is this true and if so how long can they patrol before they’ve got to have a break?

There is no time limit on patrol. These dogs are trained to detect narcotics and in most cases trained in other areas as well. Further, they are certified on a state level to do what they do as well as the handlers. These dogs could spend hours in a crowded area and not be affected. They do not go crazy when they smell drugs, only when they are instructed to by their handlers. The handler will decide when the dog has become tired and then a break would begin, however, if the handler assumes a break is forthcoming, another dog would be called to the scene to take over.
